Rashes can be common in children and are often the result of an allergic reaction or infection. The most common type of rash is diaper rash, which is eczema of your child’s skin under the diaper. It’s called diaper rash because it’s caused by irritation from your child’s diaper due to prolonged periods of sitting. Diaper rash can also be caused by an allergic reaction to diapers.

Rashes are generally red patches or spots that will cause your child to itch. Typically a rash will disappear on its own in about a week or so. You should seek urgent care if the rash begins to spread, enlarge, or if it develops a yellowish crusting around it. The crusting is a sign of a bacterial infection that must be treated with antibiotics.
