Children’s Head Lice

Children’s head lice are most common in those aged 3 – 12 years old. Head lice are not dangerous, but they are highly contagious, putting anyone at risk that comes into contact with an infected person. Some schools check your children’s head for any lice that may be present, but to be sure you should always check your children’s head on your own.

Children’s head lice live off of very small amounts of blood located on our scalp. Girls have a higher chance of contracting head lice as they have more hair on their heads.

A head lice infection is capable of spreading quickly. If your child experiences any of these symptoms, then they may be infected.

Common Head Lice Symptoms

  • Constant itching
  • Scratching the head often
  • Inflamed scalp
  • Feeling as if you’re being tickled on the head
  • Trouble with sleeping

If you find out from anyone (friend, school, etc.) that their child was infected with head lice, then it’s best to stay proactive by thoroughly checking you and your child’s head, as well as washing bed sheets, comforters, pillows, etc.

Your after hours pediatric urgent care facility can help your child receive the prompt treatment they need in order to successfully kill off any head lice, while preventing any spreading. Treatment most often includes a prescription medicated topical including shampoo, lotion, or cream. Your urgent care doctor will also give you any guidelines to follow in order to ensure your home is free from head lice.
